Can I run a diesel generator off of home heating oil?

October 21st, 2011 3 comments

Question by Peter Griffin: Can I run a diesel generator off of home heating oil?
Is it possible to run a diesel generator off of home heating oil? Any info would be appreciated.
How long will diesel fuel stay stable in a 5 gallon gasoline container? Is it like gasoline in that it isnt stable for long without the use of stabilizer?

If it doesnt stay good for long, is there such a thing as “diesel stabilizer’? Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by diofanbo
home heating oil is kerosene it wil work but I would at least mix it half and half with diesel because the consistency will be too thin for most diesel engines this is why kerosene is added to diesel in the winter when it tends to gum up

Q&A: How much would it cost to have a gas heating system installed in an older brick home with an oil furnace?

October 17th, 2011 2 comments

Question by HeatQuestion: How much would it cost to have a gas heating system installed in an older brick home with an oil furnace?
The house is in a neighborhood with gas lines, but I don’t know how close the main gas line is. It’s roughly 1,200 square foot. It also has a fireplace, which will help with the heating costs but we want to find out how much it would be to make the change from oil to gas, as oil can be so expensive.

Best answer:

Answer by fluffernut
Assuming the duct work is all set up, etc I can only tell you our 2,000 sf home got a new super energy efficient furnace and it cost around $ 7,000…just under I think.

Your home is smaller but you’ll have the cost of running in a gas line.

New furnace is super quiet……wow…..I can be in same room with it and not realize it is running.

Assume your home is older so air exchange should be a problem, newer homes need to add an air exchange unit to bring in extra air to the home.

Also make certain you are fully insulated, probably the #1 best home improvement for energy and $ $ conservation.

Who invented the modern day air conditioning and heating systems?

October 17th, 2011 Comments off

Question by trollfinder: Who invented the modern day air conditioning and heating systems?
As you all know it’s pretty cold lately, and most people’s houses have their heating going, and it had me thinking, who invented the modern day air duct and heating systems? I know that there had been furnaces and heating since Cleopatra’s time but not the modern ones we have now, so, who was it?

Best answer:

Answer by Caretaker
Benjamin Franklin invented the Franklin Stove that heated flowing air rather than just heating a space such as a fireplace would. However forced air heat dates back to at least the Roman times when they lit fires causing the movement of heated air to go through channels heating other parts of the structure. http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=294991 If you are talking about ‘Forced Air’ as we know it you can only go back to 1947, http://www.google.com.sg/#q=history+of+forced+air+heating&hl=en&tbs=tl:1&tbo=u&ei=nJVFS_-DKM2HkQXsqZCCAw&sa=X&oi=timeline_result&ct=title&resnum=11&ved=0CDMQ5wIwCg&fp=727c4efb8f8690a1

Many years ago I read where the Ancient Egyptians had slaves draw large blocks forming portions of their walls into the desert at night where they would become very cold. Before dawn they would be drug back and reinserted into the walls where they would soak up heat from the room during the day. But I can’t find any confirmation on the web.

How can I childproof a heating floor register?

October 16th, 2011 Comments off

Question by sal: How can I childproof a heating floor register?
We are renting an old house and the only heating is from a grate in the living room floor. We have a baby gate around it,but my 11 month old keeps throwing toys over the gate. If I don’t catch them in time, it gets hot enough for them to melt. Does anyone know what I can use to cover it that will let the heat through, not be hot enough to melt things or cause burns, and not be burnt or melted itself? At this point, I don’t care if it’s ugly, just pet, child and toy safe.

Best answer:

Answer by livin life
I dont know what u can buy, but why not build a wire mesh box to put over it..if its about a foot high, it wont get too hot for little hands or toys.

How much does It cost to have solar heating installed?

October 12th, 2011 3 comments

Question by gmcfayden: How much does It cost to have solar heating installed?
I am looking to find alternative means of energy.

My electrical bill is astronomical as it is the only source of energy in my home.

I no longer use gas heat as my last heating bill was almost $ 600.00 a month. So, all sources of energy in my home is certainly electrical in nature.

I am looking to have solar panels installed for home heating and for hot water.

About how much am I looking to throw into this gesture?

Anyone have an idea how to get started?

Your sister,
Ginger

Best answer:

Answer by Aussie Witch 50
I have made some enquiries on going totally solar and for a hot water service was around $ 4,000.00..
I am going to totally cover my roof (only 3 sides) with solar panels which will cost around $ 24 – $ 30,000.00…
Right now my Government is paying us rebates as incentives to become green on a variety of things ; especially since we are in the worst drought since recorded history…
My prices are in Aussie dollars, and are Aussie made products…

Ginger what do you do leave all your lights on 24/7, go to the low green light bulbs, a 75W globe can be reduced down to 14W, a 25W globe which I use in the passage and in all bedrooms down to 5W…
I have normal reading lights, but I find I only need those lights to just to negotiate my way, so they don’t have to be bright..
A $ 600.00 electric bill per month I find absolutely staggering, your electricity must be very expensive, my average bill @ pensioner rates is around $ 115.00 for 3 months…
Good on you Ginger, go green and let’s help to save our Mother Earth…
Blessed Be… )O(

Q&A: What is more efficient with a hydronic radiant floor heating system, a programmable or regular thermostat?

October 10th, 2011 1 comment

Question by Boludo: What is more efficient with a hydronic radiant floor heating system, a programmable or regular thermostat?
We just installed a radiant floor heating system and our plumber tells us that a regular thermostat is in fact more efficient than a programmable one, because it doesn’t have to use a lot of energy to get the water hot again. We installed a high efficient munchkin boiler. Thoughts?

Best answer:

Answer by Derek
I look at it like this..radiant heat is a nice even heat once its up and running. If you let your home go cool when your not home, a radiant system is going to have more recovery time than forced air. Any setback would be savings, but I dont think it would be substantial.

If your heating and cooling ducts are disconnected somewhere beneath your house how do you go about fixing that? Can you do it yourself? If yes..how? If you have to have it done professionally about how much does that cost? AND just how does that happen?

Best answer:

It is an easy diy project. As far as fixing it, that depends on the type of duct system. Also, as long as you are repairing it, you may want to seal the ducts and insulate them to save money. For more info, check out the ducts page at my source.
