Has the cost of electricity increased at the same rate as heating oil and natural gas?

October 3rd, 2011 2 comments

Question by Damon: Has the cost of electricity increased at the same rate as heating oil and natural gas?
I’m and trying to find out if it is better to use electricity, heating oil or natural gas for household water heaters and boilers/furnaces. I know heating oil has increased at unreasonable rates. Have the cost of electricity and gas or propane increased at the same rates?

Best answer:

Answer by jim k
in this area, natural gas and electric rates are very comparable. propane or butane may be somewhat less expensive, but you will have the cost of the fixtures etc….

i think i would look at a natural gas high efficiency unit.

Question by John: How do electric blankets work (specifically) ? Are the heating coils powered by a low voltage?
Are those heating coils powered by a 12V source? I have a hard time imagining that it would be 120Vac, in the event of a failure..
I thought maybe there was a transformer in the control module. So, basically it’s like sleeping with an extension cord in my bed, eh?

What is the most cost efficient way to run in floor heating?

September 27th, 2011 1 comment

Question by : What is the most cost efficient way to run in floor heating?
I have in floor heating (I believe it is electric) and am wondering what the most cost efficient way to run it would be? The entire house is controlled by one (programmable) thermostat. I am gone for work most days for approx 10 hours, and am sometimes out of town for several days at a time. Should I turn my heat off? Or should I set it at a temp (65-67*) and leave it on at all times? Also, are there times of day that electricity is cheaper?

Best answer:

Answer by Your Handyman Jim
I found with radient heat the best way to go is to find a “nice” temperature and leave it be. Unlike forced air, RH doesn’t change indoor temperatures quickly. It is more cost effective to keep the room at a static temp. It always costs more to heat up than to maintain.

Radient heat gets everything around it warm, the element ( or water line) warms the floor, the floor warms the furniture, and so on. I have found I am able to keep thermostat lower with radient than with forced air, because everything is warm, and there is less cooling of the air as with FA.

Another benefitting radient is air quality without ducts…air quality is much better

Hope this helps

Community Insurance & Associates Offers Tips for Protecting Wisconsin Vehicles During Extreme Heat

Amherst, WI (PRWEB) August 31, 2011

Although the Midwest is better known for extreme winters than sweltering summers, Wisconsin experienced a serious heat wave toward the end of July, one that reportedly killed five older residents. The extremely high temperatures have been a cause for concern among many drivers who have Wisconsin car insurance who have been taking advantage of the relief provided by their vehicle’s air conditioning. Driving in the heat, especially when this involves sitting in traffic, can bring about unwelcome auto problems.

In order to help Wisconsin residents make it through the summer without any heat-related car problems, the team at Community Insurance & Associates offers the following tips on how drivers can care for their car:

Checking coolant levels on a regular basis is a must during the summer months. This way, drivers won’t be left on the road without air conditioning.

Believe it or not, gas and acid in the car battery can evaporate. In order to prolong battery life and avoid running on empty, drivers can park their cars in a shaded area during peak sun hours.

Low tire pressure can make a car’s wheels susceptible to failure, especially when the pavement is extremely hot. It is essential to check tire pressure on a regular basis so that this problem does not cause a serious accident.

Just like people would not skimp on Wisconsin home insurance, they shouldn’t choose an auto policy based on price alone. There are countless things that can go wrong when cars are driven in extreme heat, which is why it is important for individuals to have a comprehensive insurance plan.

The above tips can help protect Wisconsin residents’ transportation investments and even save their lives. However, it’s not just individuals who have to worry about travel safety. Employers should also take extra precautions to ensure that their work vehicles are kept up to par in the heat.

About Community Insurance & Associates:

Established in 1928, Community Insurance is a full service, independent Wisconsin insurance agency. Since the agency opened its doors over 60 years ago, the main focused has been on central Wisconsin. Question by jen: What would be the best color for a shirt for a heating and cooling business?
We are starting our own business and its for heating and cooling. I think that navy blue, light blue, maroon, or red would be the best colors but
my husband wants a green shirt and wants to incoporate shamrocks. I think thats a bad idea because green to me would be more like a lawn
service color and shamrocks have nothing to do
with heating and cooling. Any ideas would be
appreciated. Also any links to websites for ideas
for logos for shirts would be appreciated. Thank you.

What is the average power used for heating in this house?

September 21st, 2011 1 comment

Question by Jayla: What is the average power used for heating in this house?
The energy need of an average sized house is 25000 kWh for one year. Three fifths of this energy is used for heating. What is the average power used for heating assuming heating is mainly needed during the cold part of the year?

Best answer:

Answer by MVB
3/5 of 25000 kWh is 15,000 kWh.

A year has 365 days (or revise to 365.25 if you want) which is 8760 hours.

So the average consumption is 15000 kWh/8760h = 1.71 kW.

Note this is NOT per hour. The consumption averages 1710 watts.

I do not know how you’re supposed to do this problem making some kind of undefined assumption about “the cold part of the year.”

A Heat Pump is essentially the same as an air conditioner, but with one extra feature added. On cold days, a heat pump reverses its operations and heats the house instead of cooling it. September 16th, 2011 2 comments

Question by Bernese: What are my cheaper heating options to get ready for Winter, I have a fireplace but not an insert?
I don’t want to have high heating bills, I thought about using the fireplace but I don’t have the stove that goes in it and people have told me that it doesn’t do much good unless you have the heating stove in the fireplace.

Best answer:

Answer by michael k
You don’t need an insert. There is a control lever that can be adjusted t help hold the heat in the fireplace longer. You can also place a fan beside the fireplace set on a slow speed and it will help pull heat from the fireplace.

Also, if you use wood in the fireplace it won’t burn as hot as Lump Coal will burn. If you choose Lump Coal you’ll get much better heat than you would with just plain wood.

Michigan HVAC Leader Slashing Prices on A/C Tune-ups Until Aug. 31

Michigan HVAC Leader Slashing Prices on A/C Tune-ups Until Aug. 31

Grandville, MI (PRWEB) August 15, 2011

Vredevoogd Heating and Cooling has a three-step plan for making Michigan heating and cooling more affordable this summer: Extend equipment life. Lower your energy bills and unit replacement costs. Cool homes efficiently and affordably. Through steep service discounts and an expert fleet of service specialists, the Michigan HVAC leader is determined to prove it can be done.

In fact, until August 31, the company is practically giving away air conditioner tune-ups for just $ 89.

Providing affordable, innovative solutions to MI heating and cooling needs for more than 45 years, the Grandville-based company believes that air conditioner maintenance is good for the equipment, good for the earth, and good for homeowner bank accounts. Here’s why:

If homeowners don’t regularly service their A/C units, the cooling equipment is likely to become at least five percent less efficient each passing year. In fact, it’s even common for top-quality air conditioners with SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings of 14 or higher to drop below 10 — more than a 30 percent loss of efficiency. At best, they’ll be left with an old, inefficient HVAC system that both struggles to keep their houses cool and costs a fortune to do so. At worst, the system will break down when saddled with high demands, like, say, the middle of one of the hottest weeks of the year. Homeowners are then left with both a hot house and an expensive repair or new purchase on their hands.

Instead, regular A/C tuneups keep cooling units operating efficiently and effectively, both lowering monthly energy bills and extending the life of HVAC units. Vredevoogd’s service specialists are widely known as trustworthy, informative, and a joy to work with, making the entire service process affordable and worry-free.

“This is just a note to let you know that your employees are to be commended. They are awesome to work with. They are professional and great representatives of your organization,” said one satisfied client.

To learn more about HVAC maintenance in Michigan, request an appointment online or call Vredevoogd at (616) 534-8329.

About Vredevoogd Heating and Cooling: Launched all the way back in 1964 by heating, ventilating, and air conditioning specialist Dennis Vredevoogd, the Michigan HVAC leader has seen its committed, expert staff grow to more than 40 people today. Their goals, however, have remained unchanged: Provide efficient, affordable products to folks across Grand Rapids and Grandville. Back those purchases with a high-character, trustworthy fleet of service technicians and keep Western Michigan comfortable. As result, the company has earned A-plus ratings from the Better Business Bureau.
